Post 258 has touched many a 3rd-graders heart, mind and smiles since 2017! Post 258 budgets funds to purchase the Student Dictionary (with the Gazetteer containing extra info such as the Constitution, the presidents, the states, weights and measures, and so much more), plus some Spanish/English dictionaries, and a few Student Dictionaries (with Animal Gazette) (for the schools that have a combined 3rd/4th grades - regular Student Dictionary for the 3rd and the “Animal” Dictionary for the 4th).
Post 258’s involvement in ‘The Dictionary Project’ commenced 8 years ago. Under the leadership of Cliff Mulder this program has blossomed.
The program involves gifting third grade students with a dictionary. This is not just any dictionary…it contains history about our Country, our Presidents and our Geography. There are reference sections on the Sciences as well. The project advances our responsibility as Legionnaires for involvement with the Children and Youth of our Community. The program has grown from 1 elementary school to 13 with hundreds of dictionaries distributed every year. The Teachers now use them as a valuable part of their lesson plans.
In the course of the presentation the Post and Auxiliary members give the students a brief history about the American Legion, the various branches of the service, the significance of the red poppy, and the history behind a challenge coin.
Cliff Mulder has not only led and championed the program, he has also generously supported it financially. Post 258 and Unit 258 contribute funds as well.
Donations are welcome! If you are inclined to help please send a check to President Gerald R. Ford Post 258 at the Boat & Canoe Club. In the memo indicate your donation is intended for the dictionary project.
These are all purchased for the Dictionary Project (a national organization) (and these books are geared for 3rd graders).
